Mindful Trader Commentary For August 4, 2022

Hey Guys,

The market is relentless right now. It just keeps going up. The S&P 500 is now up around 4160.

I bought some new positions today. In the main account I bought FIS. In the low-priced account I bought ALSN and KLIC.

All three of those tickers just had earnings released, so they are highly volatile. For one, FIS wasn't even on my watch list because it wasn't close to triggering last night when I made the watch list, but then its price dropped a lot overnight due to their earnings announcement and triggered an entry this morning. Beyond that, right after I bought FIS, the price dropped a lot, and then just minutes later it rebounded and shot above my entry price.

ALSN also dropped a lot right after I bought it -- it actually got close to my stoploss, but then now it's back near my entry price. During earnings season, it can kind of be like riding a bucking bronco. You might find that if you follow my trades of tickers that just reported earnings, sometimes you get a way lower price than me and sometimes the price will be well above my entry price. I did research that suggests that getting a different price than me may not result in different profitability than me over the long haul, but ultimately you get to decide how to handle each trading opportunity.

My options position for QCOM hit its profit target yesterday. I had a few stock positions close this morning due to reaching their time limits. One was MAS, which ended up with a partial loss despite being so close to a profit early in the trade. I've accepted it and am ready to turn the page.

Yesterday, NYT actually had a transaction occur at my profit target price. If you look at the price bar for that ticker, it shows the high was 31.86, which is where my profit target order is set up. But my order didn't fill, so I still have the position open on the website. It's somewhat rare for that to happen, but it's definitely possible and has happened to me before. It's all a part of the trading experience.

My LUV option position reached its time limit today, so I'll be closing it near the end of the trading session today unless it reaches its profit target or stoploss before then.

If you have any questions or feedback, I'd love to hear from you.
